What's the deal on your different Tele pickups?
Okay, you mentioned Z-90, and some folks have put them on Teles, but forget everything I said... The '54 Special pickup is close to the relic you heard, probably slightly smoother and fuller (more bottom) and a bit less 'edgy'..but very much in the same ballpark..if you want that relic sound, this will do it, slightly better. I just put a set on a MIJ tele I bought on the TDP....MUCHO differencio... But if that relic was definetly a bit thin for you, the difference between the V+ and Super 90 is that the V+ retains much of the basic Tele character. The Super 90 is higher output, and clearly has a 'gibsony' tonal thing going, a fuller, more compressed midrange. It actually can't sound like a P-90 when it's on a Tele, especially with the ashtray/steel bridge, but it's a less 'Fender Tele' tone- about half way between a Tele and a P-90... V+= higher output retains much tele tone, super 90= more output, and more p-90 ish... the V+ strat will work in the neck position with either one, it's actually about halfway between the output of the V+ and Super 90 bridge pups, and VERY much bigger range and output than whatever's on there now...if you want to have the neck pickup a cleaner, more twangy tone, the '54 special strat pup will work, and be slightly warmer and smoother than most strats.... |
